I believe Toor Dal (split pigeon peas)  is the tastiest of all the lentils. It has a rich flavour that leaves you awestruck. Try it out:

  • Sauté roughly chopped tomatoes and (green) capsicum in oil.
  • Enhance in hing (asafoetida) powder, chilli and turmeric powder along with salt and mix up the mixture.
  • Soak Toor dal in water for about 30 minutes before blending it in with the mixture.
  • Pour warm water over the blend. This dal swells up in its form … you need to add warm water at regular intervals so that it does not stick to the base of the utensil or  you can opt to use a Pressure Cooker to cook this dal, pour water about twice the quantity of the blend and cook it in low flame for around 15 minutes.
  • Once this dal totally flattens out, the Toor mania is ready for relish.

When words fail …

… am I writing louder when words fail me?

I feel, I can no longer write,

The threads of beautiful words no longer dwell within me.

I’m sitting in a quiet room, hoping for words to fill in the unoccupied space of my mind.

I look outside through the windowpane; it crafts the unclouded bright image to seem a tad dull.

I cannot feel the wind but I see it’s blowing to flutter the delicate leaves of the plants.

When words fail … I feel, I can no longer write,

Or am I writing louder when words fail me?

To make vegetables delicious to eat is a challenging task. Here is a recipe to make raw banana browns:

  • Portion the raw banana in think round slices.
  • Boil these slices (…it probably takes 10 minutes for the slices to soften). Drain the water immediately otherwise these slices will turn mushy.
  • Immerse these slices in chilli, turmeric, coriander, cumin powder and garam masala … and do not forget salt! Let it rest in the masala for about 15 minutes.
  • Sprinkle semolina over each slice.
  • Pan-fry the slices for few seconds.

HAPPY EATING!  (Praiseworthy … isn’t it?)

Masala French Fries

Quick Indian recipes – Easy,healthy,delicious

IMG_0098

My child loves to eat French fries. He happily hops the minute he happens to know that he is going to get a treat of French fries from me.

The twist in the tale is … these are masala French fries (of course, that is the Indian twist).

  • Cut the potato in thick wedges.
  •  Drench the potato wedges in turmeric & chilli powder, garam masala and salt.
  • A trick to complement more flavour into these wedges:  you can mix the vegetable oil with a little left over oil  used to fry any non-vegetarian food …before you set to deep fry the potato slice.
  • Strain the potato wedges from the hot oil as soon as it turns puffy.

HAPPY EATING! (Distinctly different … for sure)

The Humble Dal

Quick Indian recipes – Easy,healthy,delicious

IMG_0074

Dal is a lentil soup which is served over steamed rice. It is usually prepared daily in every Indian household, (Yes, I do it too and it tends to become boring to cook dal in a similar method every day) to break the monotony I experiment with it and this is one of the swiftest methods: (Moong and Masoor dal)

  • Boil the lentils till it totally softens in water: Mix of Moong dal (green gram dal) and Masoor dal (lentil dal, pink lentil) –  in equal quantity

The thicker you want the soup the less should be the quantity of water.

Tadka (tempering)

  • To hot oil, at first add fenugreek seeds followed by thinly sliced onion.
  • Toss in hing (asafoetida) powder, curry leaves, green chillies, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Pitch in finely chopped pieces of tomatoes.
  • When the blend softens to form a fine paste, empty it over the boiled dal…
